The Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society presented an exhibit commemorating the first anniversary of the signing of the Space Cooperative Agreement between NASA and the Hungarian Space Agency, on May 15, 2001. The exhibit showcased some of the activities of both American and Hungarian space research.

At this exhibit, the Hungarian Space Agency joinsed with the Museum and NASA in highlighting the history of Hungarian space activities and its contributions to international space research. One example was the Pille dosimeter, designed, developed and manufactured in Hungary, which measures radiation in space.

The actual Pille that was used by NASA’s astronaut Jerry Leninger in the MirNASA 4 mission in 1997 was on display, courtesy of the Hungarian KFKI Atomic Energy Research Institute. A number of colorful posters showed the space activities of different Hungarian institutions such as the Hungarian Space Office, the Institute of Geodesy Cartography and Remote Sensing, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Universal Multizone Crystallizator (UMC) developed by the Miskolcs University. The posters also showed how the satellites are used in Hungary to monitor flood control, agriculture and the environment. This material would be ideal for Earth Day activities for school children (Earth Day 2002 was Sunday, April 21, 2002).

NASA Glenn Research Center contributed materials on its research associated with bio-engineering and –medicine, also examples of technology transfer, such as the use of ceramic materials, originally developed for space, for everyday articles. Models of the International Space Station, of the Space Shuttle and of one of the Ion Engines were also on display. A real space suit used in space walk activities stood next to a prop-up space suit for the enjoyment and picture taking of potential astronauts, youngsters as well as adults. Additionally, there were videos and CD’s showing various space flights and other fascinating space activities.

NASA Glenn officials, including Mr. Donald J. Campbell, Director, Dr. Julian M. Earls, Deputy Director of Operations and Mr. András Roboz , Science and Technical Attaché, Hungarian Embassy, Washington, DC, participated in the opening ceremonies on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. in the Hungarian Heritage Museum, formerly located at the Southeast entrance of the Euclid Square Mall shopping center.

This exhibition was made possible through the efforts of Lászlo F. Zala, a Museum board member, former Chief of the Facilities Electrical Systems Management Branch with NASA Glenn. He has been with Glenn for 15 years, and spent the academic year 2000-2001 as a Visiting Professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. We thank him for his dedication and hard work, which enabled the Hungarian Museum to present such an exciting and one-of-a-kind exhibition for the enjoyment and education of young and old alike.
