Title: Regional dialects of Hungarian:  How are they perceived by children? Presented by Dr. Krisztina Fehér

In February, we celebrate International Mother Language Day.  In celebration of this day, we invite you to attend a lecture by a distinguished Hungarian linguist, Dr. Krisztina Fehér. She will present the results of her research about children’s perceptions of regional dialects of Hungarian.  A regional dialect is a variety of a language spoken in a particular geographical area. The common perception is that regional dialects are valuable language varieties. Regional dialects imply group affiliation and comprise an integral part of one’s identity.  Yet, when deciding among job applicants, employers often prefer those who speak the standard language as opposed to those who speak a regional dialect. Is that preference characteristic of adults only or do children also prefer those who speak the standard language to those who speak a regional dialect? If so, at what age and in what way does this preference manifest itself? The findings of a field experiment will be presented. Dr. Fehér’s research explored 5 to 9-year-olds’ subjective reactions to a regional dialect of Hungarian.  This lecture is presented in English.

Dr. Krisztina Fehér is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Hungarian Linguistics, University of Debrecen. Her research interests are child language and sociolinguistics. She earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics. Currently, she is a Visiting Lecturer at Cleveland State University. She instructs Hungarian language courses in the Hungarian Program and linguistics courses in the Linguistics Program.
